Zymergen was founded in 2013 by Josh Hoffman, Jed Dean and Zach Serber. The company is based in Emeryville, California with offices in Boise, ID; Medford, MA; Seattle, WA and Tokyo, Japan.

Zymergen has partnered with companies like Sumitomo, the Japanese chemical conglomerate, and FMC, a U.S.-based pesticide and agricultural products developer, to bring its novel biologically-based chemicals to market.

Zymergen's platform integrates automation, machine learning, and genomics to navigate the genomic search space. It uses a technology platform to optimize strains in that improves economics; improves the existing production strains within existing manufacturing processes; and improves the correlation between the lab and commercial manufacturing.

Zymergen is backed by Goldman Sachs, True Ventures, Baillie Gifford, Two Sigma Ventures, DCVC, SoftBank Vision Fund, Baron Capital Group, Prelude Ventures, Obvious Ventures and others. The company raised $300M in Series D round on Sep 08, 2020. This brings Zymergen's total funding to $874.1M to date. Zymergen was previously valued at $1.05B after it had raised a Series in Dec 2018.

Zymergen went public on Apr 22, 2021. The company raised $500M at a $3B IPO valuation. Zymergen has also acquired Radiant Genomics and enEvolv, Inc. to date.
