Rivian was founded on 4 April 2009 by Robert "RJ" Scaringe. The company has it's headquartered based in Plymouth, Michigan with additional offices in San Jose, California; Irvine, California; Normal, Illinois; and the United Kingdom.

Rivian's vehicles and technology are designed and engineered to challenge what’s possible and to inspire people to explore the world in new ways.

In 2017 Rivian announced it was building an electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) and pickup truck on a platform that executives claim can be modified for future vehicles or adapted by other companies, with both vehicles semi-autonomous and designed for on-road and off-road driving.

 

Rivian's funding is backed by Ford Motor Company, Standard Chartered Bank, Amazon, Cox Automotive, & Sumitomo Corporation of America. The company raised $350M in its latest Corporate Round financing on Sep 10, 2019. This brings Rivian's total funding to $1.8B to-date.

 

Rivian's valuation drops to $3.5B during it's latest financing from it's previous $5B on Apr 24, 2019 from, when the company raised $500M from Ford Motor.
