Pairwise

Pairwise is an AgTech startup that develops new varieties of crops by developing genome editing tools, leveraging plants' natural genetic diversity, and creating partnerships and collaborations with agriculture companies.

Pairwise brings together leaders in agriculture and technology to harness the transformative potential of genome editing to address our food system’s needs.

Pairwise was founded in 2018 by David R. Liu, Feng Zhang, and Keith Joung. The company is headquartered in Durham, North Carolina.

Pairwise uses technology to break down the barriers that keep us from eating produce.

Pairwise, through the unique use of CRISPR technology, will help build a healthier world by introducing better fruits and vegetables with improved taste, enhanced convenience, increased shelf life, improved yield, simplified harvesting, or lengthened season availability.

Pairwise formed a strategic partnership with Bayer, to advance agriculture research and development through gene-editing technology. Under the partnership, Pairwise works in corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton and canola crops exclusively with Bayer.

Pairwise is backed by Leaps by Bayer, Pontifax AgTech), Deerfield Management Company, Monsanto Growth Ventures (MGV), Temasek and others. The company raised $90M in a Series B round on Feb 03, 2021. This brings Pairwise's total funding to $115M to date.
