Strava's service uses the GPS functionality of mobile phones or other devices such as Garmin or Fitbit devices to record multiple types of data during athletic activities.

Strava includes an API which connects into numerous third-party services such as map visualizers. The site has aspects similar to other sites like MapMyRide or Ride With GPS. The basic service is free but an optional subscription component allows access to additional statistical detail. Members include both amateur and professional athletes.

Strava positions its activity tracking as focused on the community and networking aspects of the app and service, with features like virtual competitions and community goal-setting as representative of that approach. 

Strava has 70 million members, with presence in 195 countries globally. The company debuted a new Strava Metro service earlier this year, leveraging the data it collects from its users in an aggregated and anonymized way to provide city planners and transportation managers with valuable data about how people get around their cities and communities

Strava is backed by Sequoia Capital, TCV, Madrone Capital Partners, Dragoneer Group, Jackson Square Ventures, Sigma Partners and others. The company raised $110M in a Series F round on Nov 16, 2020. This brings Strava's total funding to $151.9M to date.
