Sea Machines

Sea Machines Robotics is the lead provider of advanced technology for the marine and maritime sector with a product line of autonomous control and navigation systems for commercial boats and ships.

Sea Machines builds autonomous vessel software and systems, which increases the safety, efficiency and performance of ships, workboats and commercial surface vessels.

Sea Machines was founded in 2014 by Michael G. Johnson. The company is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, with offices in Hamburg, Germany and Denmark.

Sea Machines manufactures a number of vessel intelligence systems that provide “operator-in-the loop” autonomous command and control. The SM300, which is designed to integrate with existing sensors to manage preplanned and dynamically charted missions, features obstacle and traffic avoidance.

Sea Machines taps in-house technology called TALOS to connect a vessel’s propulsion machinery with navigation sensors and allow for autonomous and remote control. This makes mission planning, pilot-ready navigation, and common workboat routing tasks possible, and it allows the system to serve as a data recorder.

Sea Machines is also launching SM400, an AI-powered situational awareness mechanism that leverages computer vision, lidar, object identification, and tracking. Sea Machines has deployed systems on vessels serving a multitude of sectors. From large cargo vessels (such as the previously disclosed program with A.P. Moller-Maersk) to U.S.-flag ATBs and data-collecting survey boats, oil-spill response craft, search-and-rescue (SAR), patrol and crew transfer vessels.

Sea Machines is backed by Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), Accomplice, Toyota AI Ventures, Brunswick Corp, Geekdom Fund, NextGen Venture Partners, Eniac VC, LaunchCapital and others. The company raised $15M in a new round on Jul 22, 2020. This brings Sea Machines' total funding to $27.3M to date.
