OpenOcean is an early-stage venture capital firm operating across Europe with offices in London, Helsinki, and Amsterdam.

OpenOcean invests in relentless founders who empower a data-driven society with delicious, data-intensive software (A-round).

OpenOcean was formed in 2009 by Michael Widenius, Patrik Backman, Ralf Wahlsten, and Tom Henriksson. The firm is headquartered in Helsinki, Northern Finland, Finland.

OpenOcean invests in enabling technologies for the data-driven future, such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, data infrastructure and automation, with its main focus on B2B software in Europe.

OpenOcean typically leads or co-leads Series A funding rounds in European start-ups that are removing barriers to digitalisation or enabling the potential of next-generation technologies to be realised.

 

OpenOcean has raised €92M ($111.5M) for its third main venture fund, and is aiming for a final close of €130 million by mid-way this year. LPs in the new fund include the European Investment Fund (EIF), Tesi, Oxford University’s Corpus Christi College etc. The third fund follows a €45M and €80M funds in 2011 and 2015 respectively.

 

OpenOcean has already invested in over 20 companies. Some of its portfolio of companies include MariaDB, Booksy, IQM, LoopMe, MindsDB and Nosto.
