Hortonworks is a business computer software company focused on the development and support of Apache Hadoop. It is a leading commercial vendor of Apache Hadoop, the preeminent open source platform for storing, managing and analyzing big data.

Hortonworks is focused on driving innovation in open source communities such as Apache Hadoop, NiFi and Spark.

Hortonworks was formed in June 2011 as an independent company, funded by $23 million venture capital from Yahoo! and Benchmark Capital. Its first office was in Sunnyvale, California. The company employs contributors to the open source software project Apache Hadoop.

Hortonworks has three interoperable product lines: HDP (based on Apache Hadoop, Apache Hive, Apache Spark), HDF (based on Apache NiFi, Apache Storm, Apache Kafka), and Data Plane Services (based on Apache Atlas and Cloudbreak and a pluggable architecture into which partners such as IBM can add their services.

Hortonworks partners with software-related companies, including IBM, SAS, BMC Software for business service management and automation, Attunity and Cleo for data integration, and SAP and VMware for cloud, database and other virtualization infrastructure, and with Stratoscale. In 2015 Hortonworks started partnering with ManTech Commercial Services and B23 to develop OpenSOC.
